Trying Out New Material as a Stand-Up Comic
Naked Barbie silhouettes finally get their comeuppance!
Last night I made my debut on Hennepin Avenue doing standup comedy with Lisa Lampanelli! (Okay, maybe she was at the Minneapolis State Theater and I was ten blocks away at the JDC Theater, but you get the idea.)
I was one of the dancers in Cassandra's Cabaret, a show Cassandra does several times a year, drawing different guest performers each time from the pool of club and restaurant dancers in town. The audience sits at small tables and drinks champagne and eats fruit, cheese, sweets, etc.
Cassandra and all three guests each do a 15-minute Oriental Dance Solo. After an intermission, each guest also does a shorter piece of completely of their choosing. Most dancers do a second dance; in a Cabaret years ago my second piece was a Zambra Mora.
This time I decided to FINALLY do my stand-up comedy in the show! Is there a comic you think I sound like? Let me know please!

The guy (James) that Sarah reads the "ad" to in the crown loved the show--he couldn't stop laughing! (I talked to him after the show).
ReplyDeleteSarah - you always amaze me. I was so super bummed that I missed the caberet. I already had a trip planned to AZ long before I knew about the caberet. I watched your video in this entry & am even more bummed to have missed it! You were incredible! Hope to see you soon!!
ReplyDeleteSarah, I had no idea you had the comedy bone, but I shouldn't be surprised--you excel at everything you put your mind to! It looks like you've been doing stand-up for years. The Stars Wars references were too funny. I've always wondered where they get those names and now I know!
ReplyDeleteYou are becoming a "Triple Threat Talent"! Dance, Comedy, and if you can sing...bingo!
ReplyDeleteAlways great stuff from you Sarah, thanks for reminding me why I enjoy Star Wars so much!!!
I finally had a chance to watch your comedy . . . very funny and what courage to get up in front of all those people (you looked so calm).
ReplyDeleteCongrats, I'll look for you on last comic standing!
AWESOME Clip!! I love the Star Wars nerd reproductive organs!!
ReplyDeleteYou’re really great!!!! You seem so comfortable up there. How long are you doing it for? Have you taken any classes? I’m actually thinking of becoming a “stand-up nutritionist”. I bitch so much over trying to get people to change the way they eat, I find I have friends and acquaintances cracking up when I reenact the ridiculous crap excuses I get from people (of course, many of them perpetrate the same “crimes”).
ReplyDeleteFunny! That must be the toughest kind of show biz.
ReplyDeletethat was REALLY good !!! ( :
ReplyDeleteKudos !!
Talk about a Renaissance woman! What's next???? A run for President in 2012? You were awesome. I wish I could have seen it all in person. Keep up the excellent work!
ReplyDeleteWow! I was impressed. You're really funny. I had no idea. I also really liked your dancing, especially the clip where you were wearing that red dress. Very cool. You and Dave are bot so talented you should put together a comedy act where you can play off each other.
ReplyDeleteVery funny! You might have a new career!
ReplyDeleteThis is great, Sarah...congratulations!! :)
ReplyDeleteFunny!
ReplyDeleteGood dance clips too!
I thought your routine was great! Keep it up!! Love ya!
ReplyDeleteWELL DONE!!!
ReplyDeleteA very courageous thing to try stand-up, that's for sure. I had a friend out here who did it for a while and decided not to pursue it. But I also work with a gal who has a boyfriend who's very successful with it and may be getting an offer from L.A. and N.Y., so you never know how it will play out... God bless ya for getting up there and trying!
ReplyDeleteNice job, very funny! BTW…George Lucas IS a pervert…
ReplyDeleteExcellent job, Sarah!! i think you found another niche!! i forwarded it to all of my friends!
ReplyDeleteHey Sarah, that was hilarious! I knew you were funny, but doing stand-up takes courage. A new thing to add to your repertoire of entertainment trades!
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend really enjoyed this performance at Cassandra's Cabaret (as did I)! I highly value anything that can make the man laugh. Great work!
ReplyDeleteWOW, you are FUNNY, but then I knew that from years past. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have been repeating a couple of the jokes (that I could remember), and people really like them.
I loved your work at the Cabaret!
Wish I could have seen more.
Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend- inside of a dog, it's too dark to read..... Groucho Marx
Very funny! looking forward to more!
